Vienna, 4th Apr. 1917.
Dear Mr. Schiele!
I first saw drawings by you
in the “Bildender Künstler” and
I can truthfully say I felt the greatest
admiration at first sight. The depth
of perception, the decorative effect…, but I
hope you will let me tell you
all this in person. As these things go,
I came across your drawings daily
at the time: in the “graph. Künste”,
in the “Aktion” and especially at
Lanyi where I saw the first originals.
I also have Lanyi to thank for giving
me your address. My most heartfelt wish
is to meet the artist whose works
have impressed me so deeply
and to [crossed out: encounter] view
even more of his works at his studio.
I will regrettably have to limit myself to
viewing; since my only income is the allowance
granted to me by my parents, I do not
have much purchasing power.
Thus, I kindly ask you to allow me
to visit you at your studio and to
let me know the date and time.
One more thing:
I have one week
of school holidays now and am
rather busy at other times. Please
take this into consideration,
if at all possible.
With great devotion
Robert
Lederer
