In 1833, Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905) and his father Jakob Alt (1789–1872) received a commission from Archduke Ferdinand, who would later become Emperor Ferdinand I, to create large-scale vistas of the most beautiful places in the Austrian monarchy and the neighboring countries. For this purpose, the artists went on many trips, for instance to Rome in 1835, where they created many studies to serve as templates for future paintings. The watercolor View of Rome from the Monastery of Sant’Onofrio deviates from the conventions of the classic veduta. Between the pillars of the cloister, which contracts to the right, following a diagonal axis, a view opens of the monastery garden and the Eternal City far in the background. Sophisticated perspectives enliven the picture. The interplay of light and shadow in tender colors transforms the building itself into a spectacular optical experience.
