As if engrossed in listening to a story being told, Kathi Eder, the wife of Anton Faistauer’s brother, sits on a red velvet chair in an unspecified green room. She has raised one hand lightly to her chin, propping up her face with the flushed cheeks, and holds the other one against her chest, as if momentarily moved by what she is hearing. To viewers, she is only visible in profile, with her full attention focused on something to the left that is withdrawn from the curious gaze looking at this homy rural picture, which may well have originated in Faistauer’s native village of Maishofen.
