This small image of a Hanáci girl is undated, which makes its chronological assignment difficult, but it was presumably created when Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was still a student. In the small-format portrait of a girl wearing a headscarf that is typical of the Haná region in Moravia, Klimt demonstrated his great technical skills as a painter, artfully connecting the detailed depiction of the face with the almost monochromatically rendered background by painting the dress, the headscarf and the background in a light and airy style. The way in which the girl glances sideways gives the image its spontaneous character.
