As with most male portraits from this time, it is uncertain whether this bust portrait of an old man with striking features was a commissioned work or a portrait study. Here – as well as in his Portrait of an Old Man which shows the same man – Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) experimented with delicate lighting effects through stark contrasts between bright and dark color fields. Klimt presented the work, rendered in a dusky light, at the 1st Secession Exhibition in 1898. It was also reproduced in the magazine Ver Sacrum, the Secessionists’ journalistic organ, in the same year.
