This salon table made by Gebrüder Thonet was likely created around 1880, though the company had been producing this design since around the mid-1850s. The base frames of the tables varied according to whether it was topped with a square (round) or a long rectangular (oval) table surface. In the case of a square or round tabletop, as in the present example, the table base was square. This table base already consisted of individual parts of bent solid wood, which reflected the company’s predominant production method from 1860 onwards. All the component parts, consisting of four load-bearing and several decorative elements, were subsequently glued together.
