Poem “Wet Evening”
1910
(Tulln 1890–1918 Vienna)
Translation of the Transcription:
WET EVENING.
I WANTED TO GIVE EAR TO THE
EVENING’S COOL BREATHING, TO THE BLACK
WEATHER TREES, I SAY TO THE BLACK
WEATHER TREES, THEN
TO GNATS, LAMENTING,
TO FARMERS’ COARSE FOOTFALLS
TO BELLS’ DISTANT ECHOES.
TO HEAR THE REGATTA TREES,
TO SEE THE WOOD-LINED RACE PATHS,
AND GNATS, SINGING LIKE WIRES IN THE
WINDWINTERLAND – BUT THE GREAT
DARK MAN BROKE THE MUSIC IN THEIR
STRINGS. –
THE RAISED CITY WAS COLD IN THE
WATER BEFORE ME.
