In 1916, Herwarth Walden’s (1878−1941) publishing company Der Sturm issued the portfolio Menschenköpfe [Human Heads], containing 15 etchings based on drawings by Oskar Kokoschka, some of which had also been reproduced in Walden’s magazine of the same name. The portraits show the protagonists of Modernism as well as loyal companions of the artist.
Claire Waldoff (1884–1957) was a Berlin-based performing artist who specialized in cabaret. Her career peaked in the 1920s, when she was among the best-known women in Berlin. With the rise of National Socialism, her career suffered. In December 1916, Kokoschka’s portrait of the artist was published on the cover of the magazine Der Sturm and shortly thereafter included in the portfolio released by the publishing company of the same name.
