This jardinière, or flower trough, was designed by the architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) in 1908. The object is characterized by a subtle interplay of basic geometrical forms, which are typical for the early years of the Wiener Werkstätte, founded in 1903. The actual flower container is made up of an elliptical cylinder, resting on four cylindrical feet. The handles on the side, by contrast, are shaped as concave quadrants of a sphere. The execution, using silver-plated alpacca, was carried out by the Wiener Werkstätte.
