Oskar Kokoschka’s (1886–1980) early studies were shaped by his extensive exploration of modern dance, which was omnipresent in Vienna and whose main representatives, such as Grete Wiesenthal (1885–1970), were part of his circle. Often depicted performing extravagant and dynamic movements, Kokoschka captured his models using pen, chalk or charcoal. This 1908 semi-nude shows a girl wearing nothing but a red skirt. The piece of fabric, along with the yellow bow gathering her hair, provide the only color elements in the composition. The undisputed beauty of the rendering resides in the nuanced watercolors and the girl’s upper body heightened with opaque white.
