This early work by Oskar Kokoschka was created in 1909 and is referred to as Robinson and Friday in reference works. It likely depicts Friday’s arrival on the island, to which his son Robinson had been taken by savages, and might represent the first encounter between father and son. Kokoschka incorporated his own likeness into many of his compositions, for instance in the series of lithographs The Great Wall of China and The Bound Columbus. In this depiction, too, Robinson bears the artist’s traits. The posture of the son could have been borrowed from the depiction of Eve in Raphael’s (1483–1520) The Fall of Man.
