Oskar Kokoschka’s (1886–1980) love affair with Alma Mahler (1879–1964) yielded numerous portraits in various media. Using radical lines, playing with chiaroscuro and dynamic hatching, Kokoschka depicted himself in an intimate embrace with his beloved. The depiction of Mahler was modeled on an old photograph from her youth. The ardency sublimated in this composition was not to last: The couple separated in 1915, and the end of this amour fou marked a distinct caesura in the artist’s personal and professional life.
