The artist’s use of various materials is characteristic of Josef Pillhofer’s (1921–2010) oeuvre. In addition to working with stone, wood and plaster, he also created many bronze works. In 1962, the artist carved the work Caryatid from wood, which he later cast in bronze. Removed from its initial structural function in architecture and designed as an independent work of art, Caryatid connects antique traditions and contemporary impulses through its title and its seemingly primitive form of presentation.
