Street Scene
1920
(Villach 1887‒1970 Villach)
Street scenes hold a special position in the early oeuvre of Carinthian painter Arnold Clementschitsch (1887–1970). Sketchily and with dynamic application of paint, he composed snapshots of urban life from memory or impressions he had previously gathered in Vienna, Munich, or Lemberg (today Lviv, Ukraine). In this picture of 1920, he constructed with thick strokes of dark color an architectural setting in which the protagonists, male and female, make their appearance like on a stage. They are portrayed in an expressive manner with clusters of densified strokes, partial contouring, and color accents and stand emblematically for the urban life of a time impacted by upheavals and innovations. “The city is as interchangeable as is the figure in it, to which it provides a backdrop with its boulevards, shop windows, and lights.” 1
