The center of this large-format drawing shows a monumental tree with lush foliage. The body of the snake is coiling around the tree’s trunk. Eve is holding the apple of seduction in a coquettish pose towards Adam. Armed with bow and arrow, his stance conveys resistance to the seduction. As we can infer from the signature, Anton Kolig (1886–1950) dedicated this draft for a painted tapestry, drawn with great confidence, to Clemens Holzmeister (1886–1983). Following the artistic decoration of the Vienna Crematorium, the decoration of the Salzburg Festival Hall was the second major commission that the painter had received from the successful architect. The execution of eleven painted tapestries for the newly designed festival hall was awarded to Anton Kolig and the painter Robin Christian Andersen (1890–1969). Contrary to Kolig’s hopes, the financial difficulties of the interwar period did not allow for the realization of the tapestries.
