In the painting House Wall on the River, Egon Schiele (1890–1918) again uses a motif from his mother’s birthplace Český Krumlov/Krumau. He was well acquainted with the local topography thanks to his frequent visits, some of which lasted several months. The motif in question is the facade of the former Church of Saint Judoc on the left bank of the Vltava. The church was adapted for use as a residential building in the late 18th century and the extensions facing the river were once roofed with shingles, a feature which Schiele adopted in his artistic exaggeration of the motif. Apart from that, he took great liberties with regard to composition and color: The surface of facades and water, presented in a close-up and constructed in glazes of brown shades, fills up the entire field of view, creating an extremely flat stage, on which the closed windows reflecting the light and especially the pastosely painted, colorful pieces of laundry act as protagonists in a play that eloquently relates the living conditions of the people who themselves never appeared in Schiele’s city landscapes.
