Dear Mr. Hauer,
If you can, visit me either tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, between 1 and 6 o’clock or, even better, Sunday from 10 to 6 at the studio. Whether the picture is definitely finished by then, I cannot say for certain, I believe so. – The painter A. [Anton] Peschka was with you a while ago and wanted you to take a look at the pictures which are at the Secession. – Let me briefly tell you something about Peschka. We, Peschka, Faistauer, and I, were among the most radical ones at the Academy. Faistauer and Peschka were previously good friends in a
painting school, Faistauer lived for a while with Peschka, who himself had nothing. – We met at the Academy (1908). Peschka often visited me, I portrayed him and the picture was exhibited at the Kunstschau in 1909. In the summer of 1909 and 1910 we went to Krummau [Český Krumlov]. – Right at that time in the winter Peschka painted at my studio; Klimt saw his pictures and thought that he should be shown. But Peschka does not want to exhibit the pictures he paints, he paints for himself. –
He is one of the most sincere people I have ever met; that is why I hoped that something vital will come from him. In my view and feeling, Peschka is more artist than Faistauer, he cannot, while Faistauer can. He lives primitively and so far I am the only one who helps him, in any case he should be helped, he wants to go away with us to paint for a month, because otherwise he has to paint decorations at the Opera from 8–6, so he can survive. – He brought some pictures to me, you can take a look at them, right?
Warmest greetings
Egon Schiele
