Vienna
Letter from Oskar Kokoschka to Franz Hauer
undated
(Pöchlarn 1886–1980 Montreux)
(Weißenkirchen in the Wachau valley 1867–1914 Vienna)
Translation of the Transcription:
Dear Mr. Hauer. I have had such a terrific day of work today as I have not had in onths and I have completed the picture in one go. It shows such naturalness, loveliness and such a fragrant forest atmosphere that you are clumsy to grieve for that stupid landscape if you could have a masterpiece right here. I am unconcerned that I will sell it fast, but I would like to offer the picture to you, rather you than seeing it go to Germany, because you were courageous at a time when I was feeling even worse, and because I want to have a stock of decent pictures in Vienna. If you can find it in yourself to forget this alleged insult, please seize this opportunity.
I hope you will not misunderstand me, I am offering this picture to you first because I want to send good pieces your way. The picture is priced at 3000 cr[owns].
Best regards
from your devoted OKokoschka.
