In this work, Austrian portrait and genre painter Hans Schachinger (1888–1952) focuses on an en face depiction of a peasant girl. The strong contrast between the light background and the black of her clothing is unusual in Schachinger’s oeuvre, which is otherwise characterized by a restrained color palette and low tonal contrast. The rosy-cheeked rural child meets the viewer’s gaze directly with large, dark eyes. Nothing is known about the girl’s identity of the circumstances surrounding the painting’s creation. However, it is clear that the rural milieu played an important role in Schachinger’s genre scenes.
