In August 1913, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) and Alma Mahler (1879–1964) took a trip to the South Tyrolean Dolomites. Mahler later wrote in her memoires that their time there had been “devoted exclusively to his work”: “In the morning, we went into the thick forest, in search of the darkest green spots, and in a clearing we came across young horses at play, which instantly enchanted Kokoschka. We had taken his portfolio and crayons along – despite his crippling fear of being alone, he stayed behind, and the ensuing drawings are uniquely beautiful.” Saturated with numerous nuances of green and blue, and enriched in places with purple highlights, the imposing mountain scenery conveys a charged, dramatic impression that is reinforced by a note on a sketch reading “After the thunderstorm”.
