In Semi-Nude Self-Portrait, Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) depicts himself in a frontal view, standing in front of a blue-turquoise background in a white loincloth, his upper body naked. His head is surrounded by a kind of aura. The painting exudes solemn calm. While his face is executed in detail, some parts of his body, for instance his hands, are merely hinted at; in the area of the cloth, the canvas is even visible. His fixed gaze locks with that of the observers, and yet seems to see through them and to lose itself in the distance. In this work, which can be described as symbolist, the artist quotes elements of Christian iconography to express his self-conception as an artist. With his isolation and his hanging arms he alludes to Christ, the Man of Sorrows. At the same time, the aura creates a reference to the depiction of Christ’s resurrection.
