This full-size portrait by Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) depicts his father Emil Gerstl, who has amassed a considerable fortune in Vienna with stock exchange speculation. The portly man is sitting in an armchair at a writing desk in an interior with bourgeois flair, probably in his apartment at Nussdorferstraße 35 in Vienna’s 9th District. As in Portrait of the Reserve Lieutenant Alois Gerstl, light falls into the room through the window and illuminates some parts of his body brightly, while other parts are plunged into darkness in the backlight. Despite perspectival shortening, the painting displays a Secessionist planarity. Its formal composition is determined by color planes in a complementary contrast of violet and yellow. The diagonal, dotted and dashed brushwork betrays Gerstl’s interest in Pointillism.

    Otto Kallir, Richard Gerstl (1883-1908). Beiträge zur Dokumentation seines Lebens und Werkes, in: Mitteilungen der Österreichischen Galerie, Jg. 18 (1974), Nr. 62, S. 125 und S. 167. Dr. Otto Nirenstein erstellt 1931 ein Nachlassverzeichnis, das Bild “Vater des Künstlers“ ist nicht enthalten. Das Bild war 1931 in der Neuen Galerie (aber nicht in der Ausstellung) und wurde am 19. Dezember 1934 wieder an Alois Gerstl übergeben.
