In the summer months of 1907, which he spent with the Schönberg family on the Traunsee lake in Upper Austria, Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) created about 15 small-scale colored landscapes. Employing the techniques of plein-air painting, to which he had been introduced in summer courses at the painting school of Simon Hollósy (1857–1918) in 1900 and 1901, the artist created each of these works spontaneously in a single session. Gerstl does not detach himself from the natural subject, but expresses the atmosphere of nature as he experiences it. The pictorial impression of the painting Meadow with Trees is determined by a great many varieties of a dominating shade of green. The choice of color and the composition with truncated image motifs evoke recollections of Secessionism. At the same time, the artist embarks on a path into Expressionism with his expressive brushstrokes and his informal application of paint.
