In this full-figure depiction of Mathilde Schönberg in the Garden, Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) does not create a portrait in the classical sense, since the face is reduced to a reddish color plane with dots of color representing the sensory organs. The wife of the musician Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951) almost seems to shut herself off behind a mask-like expression. She is standing motionlessly on the lower edge of the picture, with hardly any space surrounding her. Shapes and contours are dissolved. The blue dress in its loose design could be interpreted as a reform dress, the background rendered in unmixed green and lemon yellow as a flowering meadow. The pictorial impression is significantly determined by vehement brushstrokes and an agitated style of painting. Gerstl even used his fingers to paint. Gerstl’s tragic love affair with Mathilde Schönberg threw him into a deep crisis, which led to his suicide in 1908.
