In 1907, Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) accepted an invitation by the Schönbergs to spend the summer months with them in Gmunden on the Traunsee lake. The landscape of the Salzkammergut region inspired him to create several small-scale plein-air paintings. This painting in a nearly square format shows a view of the path along the shore below the Feramühle, where Gerstl was staying, over the Traunsee lake to the summit of the Erlakogel. The small-scale painting, created in a single session, lives from its expressive use of colors. In wild brushstrokes all in shades of blue and green, the artist gives a dynamic account of what he sees. The contrasts in the brushwork are characteristic for the artist. Broad, continuous brushstrokes are combined with dotted areas, with the latter recalling his Pointillist period around 1906. With his differently shaped brushstrokes going in various directions, Gerstl emphasized autonomous color spaces. This made him the first Austrian Expressionist.
