Henryka Cohn (*1877) was a self-confident pianist and part of the circle of acquaintances around the composer Arnold Schönberg, to which the painter Richard Gerstl (1883–1908) belonged as well. The portrait shows Henryka in three-quarter profile, dressed in white and seated on a couch in her apartment at Esterházygasse 23 in Vienna’s 6th District. With regard to image type, Gerstl follows the tradition of the seated lady portrait. But his expressive style of painting exceeds any academic approach. The piece of furniture dissolves into red and blue dots. The background is furiously rendered in wild, vehement brushstrokes, pushing representationalism towards a dissolution of forms. The white dress is treated only cursorily at the bottom and displays a veil-like, dotted part at the top that skillfully lets the skin of the upper arm shine through. The blue edging of the white dress is striking: The contours surround the body like an aura. The presence of the depicted is further emphasized by her serious, self-confident gaze pointed directly at the beholders.
