Between 1915 and 1930, the artist Hans Böhler (1884–1961) primarily painted people exuding a quiet elegance. As the artist painted them in an abstract manner and without characteristic features, they appear timeless. The lady in the 1925 painting Blonde Woman against Green Background, who is leaning against a small table with a flower vase, tentatively clasps her own hands. Though she was placed into the center of the depiction, the figure’s personality is not the focus of the painting. Instead, the depicted seems to be engulfed by the blue-green, shaded color fields of her dress, which appears to dissolve in the lush green that dominates the entire depiction. Using coarse brushstrokes, Böhler produced a shimmering, oscillating effect which covers the sedate figure like a veil. In this painting – whose main theme are the colors – shape and space form a whole.
