Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) was not only renowned for his Expressionist portraits but also for his landscape depictions charged with a highly dynamic atmosphere. Having resigned from his teaching position at the Dresden Academy in 1923, he embarked on extended travels through Europe and North Africa financed by his Berlin gallerist Paul Cassirer (1871–1926). These trips resulted in numerous cityscapes, including the 1925 work Amsterdam – Kloveniersburgwal II. Kokoschka created the painting during his stay there in the summer of 1925. It shows the view from the balcony of his corner apartment on the uppermost floor of the Doelen Hotel on Kloveniersburgwal towards Nieuwe Markt, with a medieval city gate in the background.
