Following his return to Vienna in 1876, Anton Romako (1832–1889) was unable to follow on from the success he experienced during his twenty-year stay in Rome. He began to explore new motifs, and after a trip to Salzburg and Gastein Valley in 1877 created his first pure landscape depictions, including the small-scale work Fog in the High Mountains (Spruce Tree with Lichens). The center of the depiction shows a monumental spruce. Shrouded in gloomy fog, it conveys an isolated and lonely impression. The austere rocks rising up from the patch of grass emphasize the rendering’s dismal atmosphere. Romako’s attempt to capture the foggy landscape of the alpine mountains turned into a manifestation of his own loneliness.
