Along with his landscapes, Anton Romako (1832–1889) is primarily known for his portraits and history paintings. This work, created in the 1860s, shows an Italian shepherd. The man averts his gaze and looks into the distance. In the work, the artist elaborated only the facial features of the portrayed and did not pay much attention to other parts of the body. The portraits created by Romako Peasant Girl with Bread Basket and Alpine Flowers boast an almost early-Expressionist style which at times deeply unsettled his contemporaries.
