Anton Romako (1832–1889) had already portrayed members of the Italian population in the 1860s Italian Shepherd with Hat. He returned to such themes in the 1880s. The painting Young Italian Shepherd with Dog shows a boy leaning against a rock, with a rifle in his right hand. He is gazing at his faithful companion. Romako paid great attention to the detailed execution of the boy’s clothes and makes the subject stand out against a background of tangled growth. In Romako’s later works, children were a conspicuously dominant motif that might be interpreted as a symbol of the soul and the psyche.
