Anton Romako’s (1832–1889) painting Peasant Girl with Bread Basket and Alpine Flowers, created in 1877, shows the portrait of a young girl looking directly at the beholder. The bright, unsettled looking background serves to highlight the child’s isolation. Cut off from any spatial anchoring, the work exudes a sense of sad loneliness, while the format, which is unusually large for this type of motif, invests the rendering with a penetrating presence. The “child motif” occupied a dominant position especially in the artist’s late oeuvre. Often rendered en face, alone and against diffuse backgrounds, the children symbolize the insecure dimension of the soul and psyche. Attributes such as flowers or animals emphasize their search for comfort and protection.
