After the horrors of World War I, Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) moved to Dresden, where he held an open-ended professorship from 1919 to 1923 at the Dresden Academy. During this time, the artist created numerous figural watercolors characterized by powerful brushstrokes and a veritable rush of colors. Kokoschka focused less on graphic elements than on a concatenation of often complementary color planes. The resulting “carpet-like” structure, which runs like a common thread through Kokoschka’s painterly and graphic oeuvre of the time, shows parallels to the “color shapes” of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Kokoschka’s paintings created in Dresden are among the best works brought forth by late-Expressionist painting.
