The numerous extant depictions of bourgeois life in Italy from Anton Romako’s (1832–1889) oeuvre were created after his move to the “eternal city” of Rome in 1856. This 1857/1860 work shows two figures engaged in conversation. Romako embedded the scene into an idyllic-looking landscape. The picturesque character of the composition is underscored by the artist’s choice of bright colors.
