The painting Two Girls was probably created shortly before Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980) left Vienna for Prague in 1934. The composition shows two young girls: One looks at the beholder with a frozen expression, while the other seems to be excitedly following events happening outside of the depiction. They are observed by two figures in the background. Up until now, it has not been possible to ascertain whether the depictions represent real likenesses. Portrait commissions were no rarity in the oeuvre of Kokoschka, who was also commissioned to create renderings of children. The bold colors and dense brushwork are characteristics of the artist’s dynamic painting style of the 1930s.
