In 1904/05 Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created some 15 known portrait studies of one and the same model who – as was handed down by Erich Lederer – was dubbed The English Girl. Her distinctive stub nose and smoothly shaped neck and shoulders inspired Klimt to execute numerous profile studies. In many of these renderings, as in the present one from the Leopold Museum, Klimt contrasted the precisely drawn outlines of the face and neck with a background of light hatching, allowing the shapes to stand out as in a relief. In this portrait, Klimt further emphasized the particularly fine strokes through the use of crayons and white heightening. The work boasts an oval signature placed within the composition to great effect. Moreover, it featured in the portfolio on Klimt’s drawings from the Lederer Collection published by Gilhofer & Ranschburg in 1919.
