This work on paper is part of the extensive group of erotic drawings that Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) executed between 1912 and 1915 and which – according to Alice Strobl – cannot be linked to any specific painting. Rather, they represent autonomous artworks which reveal a great degree of artistic elaboration. The rather unusual choice of a blue crayon, whose color proves especially effective in the areas with greater accentuation of the head and the patterned shirt, as well as the highly skilled spatial foreshortening of the reclining figure make this drawing a masterpiece. Similar works, including Reclining Female Semi-Nude from the Right with Bent Legs, Masturbating, were likely presented at the International Black and White Exhibition, shown in Vienna from December 1913 to February 1914. Klimt featured in this presentation with 98 drawings – the largest number he ever presented in an exhibition.
