This portrait drawing is one of a group of comparable drawings by Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) which can be dated around 1910 and largely represent autonomous studies that are not associated with any specific painting. The present work on paper impresses with its precise drawing which includes the exact rendering of the profile and hairstyle, the detailed shape of the shawl draped around the upper body and even the outlines of the folded hands. The scarf, wrapped tightly around the body and decorated with floral elements, reaches up all the way to the chin. Together with the head, it forms a towering vertical shape whose contours Klimt emphasized through hatching. Specifically in the area of the eyes, this drawing illustrates Klimt’s habitual practice of subsequently adding contours to an already finished pencil drawing to create extra emphasis in certain places.
