Alice Strobl associated numerous preparatory studies with the painting Adam and Eve which Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created in 1917/18 but never completed. While some of these studies date back to 1914/15, others were not executed until the second half of 1917, as the studies from Klimt’s sketchbook of that year illustrate. The present work on paper is doubtlessly one of the latest drawings, as its depiction of a standing female nude from the front matches the figure of Eve in the painting to an extent that is unusual for other studies for Adam and Eve. The model’s head inclined to the left and the wavy, long hair which the woman is in the process of untangling, the dancer’s pose with the left leg slightly tucked in, and particularly the expansive, undulating contours of the plump body, which Klimt especially emphasized in the drawing through hatching, correspond almost entirely to the figure in the painting.
