In 1907/08, Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created around 24 known portrait studies, most of which cannot be assigned to any specific painting. The Leopold Museum houses four portrait sketches from this group, including the work Bust Portrait of a Lady in Profile from the Left. Alice Strobl associated the present bust portrait of a woman wearing a fashionable, sweeping hairstyle with two further portrait studies showing women with similar hair. According to Strobl, Klimt only broadened the hairstyle retrospectively in all three cases. The present work clearly illustrates how Klimt strengthened the contours in the area of the eyes in a final step by drawing over the thin, confidently placed pencil strokes, thus investing the study with an added esthetic effect.
