Unfortunately not on display at the moment
This drawing can be linked to the group of reclining female nudes that Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) executed in connection with the first version of his painting Water Snakes II created in 1904. Three of these studies, among them Female Semi-Nude Lying on Her Front from the Right, are housed by the Leopold Museum. In the present drawing, the reclining nude with closed eyes covers herself with a ruche-trimmed stole that Klimt often gave to his nudes. Alice Strobl suspected that the model was identical to that in the Leopold Museum’s drawing Reclining Female Semi-Nude from the Right with Raised Dress. According to Strobl, both drawings, which are characterized by extremely thin, especially precise contours, can be linked to the group of drawings, dated 1904, which Franz Blei included in his 1907 publication Lucian’s Dialogues of the Courtesans. One of these drawings also forms part of the Leopold Collection.
