In contrast to his numerous graphic works, Rudolf Kalvach’s (1883–1932) painterly oeuvre comprises only about a dozen works. The painting Holy Family was created in 1907/08 and shows Joseph, Mary and the Baby Jesus, surrounded by the Three Kings and staffage figures. Characteristic elements of Kalvach’s compositions are the emphasized outlines, the figures stacked one on top of the other and their exaggerated limbs. This stylizing simplification of motifs is a distinct feature of Kalvach’s art and shows clear parallels to the design vocabulary used by Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980), one of his fellow students at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts who, like Kalvach, worked for the Wiener Werkstätte.
