Marie-Louise Motesiczky (1906–1996), who for instance studied in Max Beckmann’s (1884–1950) master class in Frankfurt, developed her unique style early on. Her main interest lay in empathetic human portraits, in which she focused on the inner life and the true character of her sitters. This portrait shows Lolita, a young Spanish girl who regularly posed for Motesiczky and to whom the artist provided a room in return. Against a roughly sketched gray background, Lolita is depicted sitting on a green-orange chair with her knees pulled up. She is gazing into the distance with a pensive and slightly lost look on her face, while nervously wringing her beautifully manicured hands. Motesiczky created several drawings of this model, some of which form part of the collection of the Leopold Museum today.
