In 1916, Herwarth Walden’s (1878−1941) publishing company Der Sturm issued the portfolio Menschenköpfe [Human Heads], containing 15 etchings based on drawings by Oskar Kokoschka, some of which had also been reproduced in Walden’s magazine of the same name. The portraits show the protagonists of Modernism as well as loyal companions of the artist.
Yvette Guilbert (1865–1944) was a French actress and singer who performed internationally and was portrayed by various artists, including Medardo Rosso (1858–1928), Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) and Oskar Kokoschka (1886–1980). Vienna’s enfant terrible saw the singer at a performance in Berlin in 1911 and subsequently created a graphic portrait of her. Kokoschka shows a disillusioned, exhausted woman. He does not include the black gloves that had become Guilbert’s trademark.
