The portrait study shows a serious-looking young woman. Her feline eyes and dark eyebrows stand out from her slim face. The Austrian painter Carry Hauser (1895–1985) reinforced the rendering’s clear outlines with colored contours, which invest the depicted with a transfigured aura. Alongside his painterly oeuvre, Hauser created a large number of graphic works. Following his studies at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts with Anton von Kenner (1871–1951) and Oswald Strnad (1879–1935), he embarked on his career as a painter, graphic artist, set decorator and writer, which was interrupted by his military service during World War I. After the War, he returned to Vienna and continued his animated artistic activities, developing an autonomous style influenced by the major movements of Expressionism, New Objectivity and Cubism. Hauser joined the Hagenbund in 1925, and in 1928 became the association’s president.
