Paula Modersohn Becker (1876-1907) is amongst the most significant female artists of early Expressionism who left behind an impressive and nuanced Oeuvre of paintings and drawings. In addition to study visits to Berlin and Paris, she also took up residence in the northern German village of Worpswede. Some of her most prominent artworks were created there. Modersohn-Becker worked cross-genre, mostly devoting herself to the visualisation of women and particularly to the portrayal of mother and child, as shown in the artwork Mother and Child painted around 1904. Fully committed to the art historical tradition of Madonna depictions, the painter drew in on a popular subject, but created in her unmistakable painterly style – varying between pasty brushstrokes and flat colour application – an extremely perceptive double portrait.
