Unfortunately not on display at the moment
There are around 24 known portrait studies that Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) created in 1907/08 which, for the most part, cannot be assigned to any specific paintings. Four portrait sketches from this group, among them Bust Portrait of a Lady in Half Profile from the Right with Sweeping Hairstyle, are owned by the Leopold Museum. Alice Strobl identified the model in the present drawing, rendered in a strict profile, in three further studies. Klimt placed trenchant color accents with red and blue crayon within the pencil contours. In the line of the face’s profile, especially, the contours are invested with a relief-like severity underscored by the background hatching. The work features a block signature which was likely not created by the artist’s own hand but looks like a faded signature retraced by a foreign hand.
